Throwback Thursday: Revisiting the Controversial LEGO Alpha Team 6776 Ogel Control Centre

Your wallet is safe this time, but your memory might not be. Today, we’re looking back at a LEGO set that landed at a rather unfortunate moment: the Alpha Team 6776 Ogel Control Centre. Released in 2000, this set, and indeed the entire Alpha Team theme, was based on a video game and featured secret agents battling the evil Ogel. Ogel, whose name is literally "LEGO" spelled backwards, aimed to ruin everyone's fun. This particular set, the Ogel Control Centre, was designed as his volcanic secret base.

The core of the set involved Ogel launching mind-control orbs from his rocket ship, aiming to take over the world. It included Ogel himself and two skeleton drones, all part of a narrative where players had to rescue captured Alpha Team members. The build itself featured 411 pieces, a moulded baseplate, and the characteristic quirky gadgets of the Alpha Team line, like dropping orbs from a rocket. The minifigure of Ogel was distinctive, even sporting transparent hooks on his hands in later variations.

However, the release of 6776 Ogel Control Centre in 2000 coincided with the tragic events of September 11, 2001. In the immediate aftermath, The LEGO Group temporarily recalled the set due to its perceived conflict with their ethical standards, particularly concerning child safety and play. It was a difficult time for everyone, and LEGO's decision reflected a sensitivity to the global mood. The set was eventually re-released, but the memory of its initial recall remains a notable footnote in LEGO history. This retrospective piece from Brickset delves into the set’s lore, its connection to the original video game, and the peculiar naming convention of its villain, Ogel.

No Indian prices or availability details are confirmed for this older set, as it is long retired. MyBrickHouse and Toycra are the stores to watch for any potential re-releases or rare finds, though it's unlikely to be available through official channels. Code ABHINAV12 takes 12% off full-price sets at Toycra, minimum order ₹500. Expect a 4–6 week lag from any potential global re-release, if that were ever to happen.

This set is a piece of LEGO history, a look back at a theme that didn't quite reach the heights of some others but offered a unique take on secret agent adventures. For collectors, it represents a piece of a specific era, albeit one marked by a sombre real-world event.

On that bombshell, it's time to say goodbye. I'll see you on the next one. Bubyee.
