Queen's Castle: A Colourful BrickLink Designer Program Submission

The world of LEGO fan design is always buzzing, and the latest whispers from the BrickLink Designer Program 2028 Wave 1 have landed. Designer Eric Nowicki has unveiled his "Queen's Castle," and it’s anything but your typical medieval fortress. Forget the usual drab greys and tans; this castle explodes with a vibrant palette, drawing direct inspiration from the playful colours of the 1970 Weetabix Castle and the geometric boldness of Piet Mondrian's art.
Nowicki aimed to recapture the spirit of older LEGO castles, like the classic 375 / 6075 Castle, rather than the sprawling complexity of modern sets. This approach results in a more accessible build experience, with a part count that would be the lowest for a Castle theme set in the BrickLink Designer Program if it reaches production. The design smartly incorporates primary colours with black linework and checkered patterns, breaking up large sections for visual interest. Even the subtle Dark Azure plates at the base hint at the castle's island setting.
Playability is clearly a priority. The castle is designed with ample space for accessories, animals, and seven minifigures. The Queen’s chamber, located in a striking black and white tower, is furnished with a bed and vanity. Many sections are designed with removable tops to facilitate easier building and play, allowing for independent construction of modules. Nowicki has also peppered the design with nods to past sets, including elements inspired by the 6090 Royal Knight’s Castle gatehouse, the 6041 Armour Shop roof, and the 6040 Blacksmith Shop. A brick-built cog is included for aquatic adventures, be it for transport, defence, or attack.
This project is a refreshing departure from the norm, aiming to bring a simple joy through its bright aesthetic and classic build feel. It’s proof of how fan designers can reinterpret beloved themes.
