LEGO Technic 42228 McLaren F1 Team MCL39: Worth ₹24,999?

At ₹24,999, the LEGO Technic McLaren F1 Team MCL39 is asking a lot — the question is whether it delivers enough. Because ₹24,999 is not exactly pocket change for 1,675 pieces.

LEGO is really leaning into the Formula 1 scene. This is the sixth F1 car in Technic in five years. We've seen Mercedes, Red Bull, Ferrari. Now McLaren. The US price is $229.99, which is about ₹19,000 if you ignore all import duties and taxes. Yeah, we don't ignore those here.

The box is black and orange, naturally. McLaren's branding is everywhere. Apparently, they are the reigning Constructors' Champions. You won't see that on the other F1 boxes. The parts come in 10 paper bags, tyres in their own box, and the larger pieces in a plastic bag. The instructions are in a paper envelope. Along with sticker sheets. Plural. Around 60 decals in total. Good luck with that.

The build starts with the differential and frame, as most Technic cars do. We get a two-speed gearbox and the engine mounted on top. The reviewer mentions the shocks are quite large for a real F1 car, but they're exposed for a good look at the suspension. It's a push-rod suspension at the rear and pull-rod at the front. For a Technic set, the packaging of the steering mechanism into a 3-wide assembly is called "quite well-executed".

The front and rear chassis pieces join together with a lot of pins. It's described as "mighty solid". There's a mention of a yoke piece, which the reviewer apparently wanted for a Michael Schumacher Ferrari set. They even tested fitting it here and found this McLaren yoke might be a bit small.

The biggest hurdle here is the price. For ₹24,999, you're looking at almost 16 months of Spotify Premium. Or a decent used scooter. While the build sounds intricate and the suspension details are a nice touch, the sheer number of stickers and the high price point make this a tough sell. We've seen similar Technic cars with fewer stickers and better value.
