LEGO Mario Kart – Luigi & Mach 8 (72050): Worth ₹18,999?

The LEGO Mario Kart Luigi & Mach 8 set (72050) is here. And your bank account is probably already calculating how many months of streaming services you'd have to sacrifice. ₹18,999 is not pocket change. It is a serious investment for a plastic car and a plumber.

This is the latest from the LEGO Super Mario universe, a line that tries to bridge the gap between physical building and interactive play. The idea is that you build the track, the vehicles, and then use a compatible LEGO Mario or Luigi figure to race them. The set itself features the Mach 8 kart, which looks decent enough, and a Luigi figure. There are also some buildable obstacles and elements to create a small racing course.

Let's talk about the core appeal. If you are a die-hard Mario Kart fan, the nostalgia factor is huge. The Mach 8 kart is an iconic vehicle from the game, and seeing it in brick form is a treat. Luigi is also a popular character, so that’s a plus. The interactive element, where the figures react to the track and collect coins, adds a layer of gameplay that traditional LEGO sets lack. It’s meant to be dynamic, not just static display.

However, the price is where things get a bit dicey. For ₹18,999, you are getting a set that, when compared to other large LEGO vehicle sets or even elaborate display pieces, feels a bit light on the brick count and overall presence. The Mach 8, while recognizable, isn't a massive build. The interactive features, while cool, rely on you owning the separate LEGO Mario or Luigi starter sets, which are an additional cost. So, the ₹18,999 is just the entry point for the full experience.

The target audience for this set is likely younger LEGO fans who are also into the Super Mario games, or adult collectors who grew up with Mario Kart. For the latter, the price might sting given the size of the build. You are paying a premium for the IP and the interactive technology. It’s not just plastic bricks; it’s a tech-infused toy.

Building the Mach 8 itself is straightforward. It uses a good number of Technic elements for the chassis and wheels, ensuring it can handle some speed when propelled by the interactive figures. The track elements are more basic, designed for the figures to interact with. The Luigi figure comes with Bluetooth connectivity and a small screen on its chest, which displays reactions and coin counts. It’s clever, but it’s also the reason for a significant chunk of the cost.

In India, the LEGO Mario Kart – Luigi & Mach 8 (72050) is available at MyBrickHouse for ₹18,999. Check Toycra for availability. Code ABHINAV12 takes 12% off full-price sets at Toycra, minimum order ₹500. This price is equivalent to roughly 7.5 months of Spotify Premium or about 1.2 months of rent in a Tier 2 city. It’s a substantial outlay for a single vehicle set, especially when you factor in the need for a separate starter pack to unlock its full potential.

So, is it worth ₹18,999? If you are a massive Mario Kart fan and already invested in the LEGO Super Mario ecosystem, and you find a good deal, maybe. But for most, the price is too high for what you get in terms of pure brick volume. The interactive features are neat, but they come at a steep cost. There are many other LEGO sets, including other vehicle builds, that offer more bang for your buck in terms of pure building experience and display value.

This set feels like it’s priced for the IP more than the bricks. It is a fun concept, no doubt. But the price point makes it a niche purchase. You are better off waiting for a sale or a bundle deal that includes a starter set.

Verdict: WAIT. Good set, but the price will drop.
