LEGO 1971 Minitalia Car (22-1): A Blast from the Past

Remember when LEGO sets were simpler? Before massive UCS sets and sprawling Technic machinery, there were humble beginnings. Brickset's latest "Vintage Set of the Week" dives back to 1971 with the 22 Car, part of the Minitalia line. This little set packs 47 pieces, offering a glimpse into LEGO's early days.

The Minitalia series itself was an interesting, albeit short-lived, experiment by LEGO. These smaller, more affordable sets were designed to be accessible, and the 22 Car is a prime example. Released in 1971, it's one of five Minitalia sets from that year. While its name offers about as much detail as the brick-built model itself, it sparks a certain nostalgia for those who remember building with basic bricks.

Comments on the Brickset article highlight the stark contrast between these vintage models and today's complex creations. One user pointed out its similarity in size to modern Speed Champions cars, a comparison that underscores how far LEGO vehicle design has evolved. Others noted its "sinister" appearance, leading to some darkly humorous speculation about the child model in the picture. This is the kind of LEGO history that makes you appreciate the journey.

For collectors looking to snag this piece of history, the usual suspects like BrickLink, Brick Owl, or eBay are your best bet. There are no official Indian retailers stocking 1971 sets, of course.

If this Minitalia Car were to appear on Indian store shelves today, it would likely cost less than a single EMI on a decent washing machine. Expect a 4–6 week lag for any new LEGO release from global launch, but for vintage sets, availability is entirely dependent on the secondary market. MyBrickHouse and Toycra are the places to watch for current sets. Code ABHINAV12 takes 12% off full-price sets at Toycra, minimum order ₹500.

It's a reminder that LEGO isn't just about the latest behemoths; it's also about the foundational sets that paved the way. While you won't find this in any local toy store, its appearance as "Vintage Set of the Week" is a cool nod to LEGO's enduring legacy.

Verdict: WAIT — check prices at MyBrickHouse and Toycra before pulling the trigger.

On that bombshell, bubyee.
