Inside, you get nine bags of pieces and a single instruction booklet. The way the bags were stacked in the box was surprisingly neat, a small detail but one that shows good presentation.

The build experience itself is robust. The minifigure is assembled in sections, connected by Technic axles and pins, making it sturdy enough for some light play or just posing. The arms have small gears to keep them from drooping, a clever touch. The body gets its characteristic trapezoid shape through some smart brick-building techniques, and the head can rotate 360 degrees thanks to a turntable base. Even the hat is attached with a pivoting element, giving it that classic tilted look, though like other similar builds (think Mario’s cap), it leaves a bit of an open cavity when removed. The spiky hair is a highlight, using slopes and curved slopes to great effect, with even a peek of brown hair visible at the back.

Once completed, the Red minifigure looks fantastic. The brick-built details are excellent, especially the V.S. Seeker. The spiky hair texture is particularly well done with the use of elongated cheese slopes. The only minor quibble is the Poké Ball accessory; it looks a bit small and cuboid, perhaps more in line with the SMART Play Pokémon rather than the traditional round ones.

The build is solid, the design is accurate, and the character choice is a strong one for Pokémon fans. However, the price point is where things get a bit tricky. The US retail is $79.99, and the price per piece is around 8.6 cents. This is pretty standard for the up-scaled minifigure line, but it’s still a significant investment.
