LEGO Up-Scaled Red Minifigure (40868): Worth It?

Your wallet might be sweating, but at least this one's a Pokémon. The LEGO Up-Scaled Red Minifigure (40868) brings the iconic trainer to life in brick form. It’s a 930-piece set, and while it doesn't come cheap, the build quality and design are pretty solid. The question is, can you justify the price for a character who's mostly silent but always legendary?

This isn't just another LEGO set; it's part of the up-scaled minifigure line, which means it’s large, detailed, and designed to be a statement piece. Red, the player character from the early Pokémon games and the inspiration for Ash Ketchum, is instantly recognisable. The set captures his look well, from his spiky hair to his signature V.S. Seeker device on his backpack, all built using bricks. No stickers here, which is always a win. The box art is bright and colourful, aimed at a 10+ audience, which is refreshing compared to some of the more sterile 18+ packaging out there. Inside, you get nine bags of pieces and a single instruction booklet. The way the bags were stacked in the box was surprisingly neat, a small detail but one that shows good presentation.

The build experience itself is robust. The minifigure is assembled in sections, connected by Technic axles and pins, making it sturdy enough for some light play or just posing. The arms have small gears to keep them from drooping, a clever touch. The body gets its characteristic trapezoid shape through some smart brick-building techniques, and the head can rotate 360 degrees thanks to a turntable base. Even the hat is attached with a pivoting element, giving it that classic tilted look, though like other similar builds (think Mario’s cap), it leaves a bit of an open cavity when removed. The spiky hair is a highlight, using slopes and curved slopes to great effect, with even a peek of brown hair visible at the back.

Once completed, the Red minifigure looks fantastic. The brick-built details are excellent, especially the V.S. Seeker. The spiky hair texture is particularly well done with the use of elongated cheese slopes. The only minor quibble is the Poké Ball accessory; it looks a bit small and cuboid, perhaps more in line with the SMART Play Pokémon rather than the traditional round ones.

The build is solid, the design is accurate, and the character choice is a strong one for Pokémon fans. However, the price point is where things get a bit tricky. It’s still a significant investment.

LEGO.in and Toycra will likely stock this set 4–6 weeks after the global launch, so keep an eye on them. Code ABHINAV12 takes 12% off full-price sets at Toycra, minimum order ₹500.

While the build quality and the iconic character make this a desirable set, the cost is considerable. It’s a great display piece for any Pokémon fan, and the build is engaging. But for that price, you’d expect perfection, and while it’s very close, the slightly small Poké Ball and the cost itself hold it back from a full-hearted recommendation right away. If you’re a die-hard Pokémon fan or collector of the up-scaled minifigures, this is a must-have. For others, waiting for a sale might be the smarter move.
