LEGO Shrek Collectable Minifigures (71053): A Fairy Tale Worth Telling?

Your wallet probably hasn't seen this much chaos since the last time you scrolled through a Shrek meme compilation. LEGO has finally dropped the Shrek Collectable Minifigures (71053), and it's a trip down memory lane that might just cost you a few fairy godmothers. After years of wishing on a star, we get DreamWorks characters in blind bags. About time, right?

The big news is that LEGO has embraced custom moulds for these characters, and honestly, it’s a good call. Trying to get Shrek’s distinctive silhouette with just a standard minifigure head would have been a disaster. They've gone all-in with specialised pieces, some even integrating headgear, which makes characters like Shrek and Fiona instantly recognisable, even if there’s a slightly… uncanny valley effect. It’s not perfect, but it’s leagues better than forcing a square peg into a round hole.

Shrek himself is pretty solid. The tunic, waistcoat, tights – it’s all there. He even comes with a fairy tale book and a dragon tile. The head sculpt is recognisable, but yeah, there’s something a bit off. Maybe it’s the proportions, or maybe he’s just seen too many ogre memes. Fiona gets a medieval gown with nice printing, but again, that head. It’s huge, it has a nose, and it just feels a bit… much. She’s packed with Donkey, which is a bit of a surprise. Donkey, bless his braying heart, is a dual-moulded piece with a rotatable head. He’s not a full minifigure, but he’s a decent companion.

Puss in Boots is a highlight. This isn't the same Puss from the other Shrek, Donkey & Puss in Boots set (72423). This one has short legs and a different face print, and he’s carrying a sack. I was half expecting him to wield a tiny plastic rapier, but the sack works too. The Three Blind Mice come as accessories with Puss, Pinocchio, and the Big Bad Wolf. You need all three figures to complete the set of mice, which is a classic LEGO move to get you buying more. They’re identical, leaning on sticks, which is a little disappointing.

The rest of the cast – Gingy, Dragon, Merlin, Pinocchio, Big Bad Wolf, Lord Farquaad, Fairy Godmother, and Prince Charming – are all represented. The dragon, in particular, is a bit of a generic build, but likely popular. The reviewer notes Merlin looks a bit like Harry Potter with a beard, which is a fun observation. A human Fiona would have been nice, but perhaps that’s asking too much from the swamp.

Overall, this is a strong licensed series. The characters are mostly well-executed, and the custom parts really make them shine, despite the uncanny Shrek and Fiona. Puss in Boots is the star. While some accessory choices and the occasional odd head sculpt might niggle, it’s a delightful addition for fans of the films. The price is where things get tricky, as is always the case with Collectable Minifigures.
