This year marks 100 years since Antoni Gaudí’s death, and LEGO is celebrating with what is now the largest set by piece count ever released. The actual Sagrada Família has been under construction for 144 years and is still not finished. The box itself is enormous, a behemoth measuring 48x52x38cm. It’s on par with the massive UCS Death Star, which tells you everything you need to know about what’s inside. Inside, you’ll find three separate boxes, each containing around 20 bags. The instruction manuals are also split into three books, though the bag numbering doesn't perfectly align with the box contents, which is a minor annoyance on a build of this scale.

Recreating Gaudí's masterpiece is no small feat. The LEGO model aims to capture the basilica as it will be when completed, a vision that should be realised sometime in the next decade. It’s incredibly detailed, using thousands of small parts to replicate the intricate textures and organic shapes of the real building. There are hardly any flat surfaces here. While Rok Zgalin Kobe, the designer, prefers not to use new parts, he has included some printed elements: Nexo Knight shields featuring two different window designs, and large curved wedges for the towers.

Despite its massive piece count, the model isn't as tall as you might expect. Standing at around 62cm high on a base of roughly 47 x 39cm, it’s still a significant display piece, and you'll need space for 360-degree viewing to truly appreciate all the details. The model is cleverly divided into six sections that slot together. This modular design is a blessing, allowing you to separate them to examine the intricate interior and hidden details. Trying to move this as a single piece would be a recipe for disaster given its heft and fragility.

The construction process mirrors the real building's lengthy development. You build the lower sections first, and the sheer scale means repetition is inevitable. Some sections, particularly the tower components, are connected by just a single stud, making them prone to rotating out of alignment if you aren't careful. This is where the fragility comes in; it’s a delicate beast. The build is challenging, yes, but also immensely satisfying as the iconic structure slowly takes shape. The ingenious parts usage throughout is proof of the designer's skill.
