LEGO PlayStation (72306): Worth ₹17,000?

The LEGO PlayStation 72306 is here, and your wallet is already preparing for impact. Announced for a 1 October 2026 release, this 1911-piece set brings Sony's iconic 1994 console to life in brick form. It’s a nostalgic trip for anyone who grew up with the original PlayStation, remembering the days of physical discs and legendary titles like Crash Bandicoot and Metal Gear Solid. The build itself, taking around 4-5 hours, is apparently more engaging than you might expect, using interesting techniques and revealing thoughtful details. Even the all-grey finish doesn't stop the construction from being visually interesting.

The set includes a foreword from Ken Kutaragi himself, the "Father of the PlayStation," which is a nice touch for fans. The build starts with a base plate featuring a flattened take on the iconic "PS" logo. More importantly, the set cleverly incorporates hidden game dioramas that slot into the sides. One such diorama is based on Gran Turismo, showcasing a miniature race track with micro-builds for trees and trackside elements. Adorable skates with coloured half-circle tiles represent race vehicles. However, the review notes a significant number of stickers in this scene, including road markings and a Gran Turismo plaque, which can be stressful to apply accurately, especially the curved ones.

The source article highlights the recognisable grill that forms the side of the console. It seems LEGO has tried to capture the essence of the PlayStation, but there are questions about how well it grasps the crucial components of its legend. While the build experience is praised for its techniques and details, the reliance on stickers for key visual elements is a point of concern. The absence of any minifigures in the set details is also a notable omission, especially for a theme that often benefits from character representation. It’s a model that’s impressive in scale and modelling, but perhaps falls short in capturing the full spirit of the original console's impact.

Official LEGO India pricing for the 72306 PlayStation is set at ₹17,000. This is a significant investment, easily covering 14 months of Spotify Premium or enough for 23kg of Amul butter. Official Indian store prices are yet to be announced, but expect availability on LEGO.in and Toycra 4–6 weeks after the global launch. Code ABHINAV12 takes 12% off full-price sets at Toycra, minimum order ₹500.

The decision to make this a 1:1 scale model is certainly ambitious, and for a certain segment of the audience, the nostalgia factor will be immense. The inclusion of game dioramas adds a layer of interactivity and fan service. However, the significant sticker count and the lack of minifigures might deter some collectors. For a set priced at ₹17,000, the value proposition needs to be strong, and the build quality and accuracy have to be top-notch. While the initial impressions suggest a solid build, the reliance on stickers and the potential for missing out on key iconic elements of the PlayStation's legacy mean this set might not be for everyone. It’s a display piece that celebrates a piece of gaming history, but whether it fully honours that history is up for debate.

On that bombshell, it's time to say goodbye. I'll see you on the next one. Bubyee.

Verdict: WAIT. Good set, but the price will drop.
