LEGO Olivia Rodrigo's Vinyl (43028): Worth It?

Your wallet called. It wants to discuss the LEGO Editions theme, and specifically this new vinyl record set. LEGO has surprised us by expanding this theme beyond sports icons to include pop superstar Olivia Rodrigo. While we previously saw football and F1 moments immortalised in brick, this new wave dives headfirst into contemporary music. Olivia Rodrigo, with her two massive albums and sold-out tours, is undeniably a huge name.

This particular set, 43028 Olivia Rodrigo's Vinyl, aims to capture her recognisable aesthetic – all purple hues, butterflies, and stars. And yes, it includes Olivia herself as a minifigure. Now, many of us might not be her target demographic. Fair enough. But the build itself is a representation of a vinyl record, designed to be hung on a wall or displayed on a surface. It’s a 360-piece set, and the price per piece isn't exactly alarming.

The minifigure is a highlight. It depicts Olivia Rodrigo in a glittery silver dress, inspired by her 2022 SOUR tour outfit. The dual-moulded legs for the knee-high boots are a nice touch, and the new hairpiece flows beautifully. She comes with two facial expressions: one smiling, the other a fun wink and tongue-out. It’s a solid representation, capturing her stage presence.

The main build is the vinyl record itself, about 18cm in diameter. An interesting SNOT technique reverses stud direction on the rear, with colour-coding to ensure correct assembly. The front is smoother, featuring attachment points for accessories and Olivia’s printed signature. However, the exposed SNOT studs on the rear that are then covered by random tiles are a bit perplexing. It seems like an unnecessary step if the goal was a smooth surface.

The "hidden feature" is where things get a bit more interesting, and also a bit bizarre. Attached to the rear is a contraption of Technic beams and clear bars. This activates a "pop out" feature. On the front, stars and a butterfly are added, along with a brick-built megaphone – a recognisable prop from her GUTS tour. Olivia’s minifigure clips in next to her signature, holding this megaphone. The pop-out mechanism is fun, but the overall purpose of the rear contraption remains a bit unclear. It’s a visual flourish that adds to the display, but it’s not exactly groundbreaking.

The set is clearly aimed at Olivia Rodrigo fans, or "Livies" as they're known. The design elements – the colours, the motifs, the minifigure, the megaphone – are all direct nods to her music and branding. If you're a fan, this is likely a must-have display piece. For the casual LEGO builder, however, the appeal might be limited. It’s a niche product, and while the build techniques are decent and the minifigure is well-executed, the overall set might feel a bit too specific for a general audience. It’s fun, it’s functional as a display, and it has a neat little trick up its sleeve, but it doesn't push any major LEGO boundaries.

No official India retail price or availability has been confirmed yet. LEGO.in and Toycra are the stores to watch for potential future stock. Code ABHINAV12 takes 12% off full-price sets at Toycra, minimum order ₹500. Expect a 4–6 week lag from global launch if it does arrive officially.

The verdict here is clear. If you're a dedicated Olivia Rodrigo fan, this set is probably a no-brainer, a fun way to showcase your allegiance. The minifigure is excellent, and the vinyl design is clever. But for anyone else, the appeal is significantly reduced. The build is decent but not spectacular, and the niche theme might not resonate. It's a solid 3 out of 5 stars – a good set, but not a universally essential one.

On that bombshell, it's time to say goodbye. I'll see you on the next one. Bubyee.

Verdict: WAIT. Good set, but the price will drop.

Standard disclaimer: if you're rich, you can skip the verdict and just buy it. The rest of us will be here doing math before we hit checkout.
