LEGO Hubble Space Telescope (11382): Worth ₹13,999?

Your wallet just got a cosmic call, and it’s not a friendly one. The LEGO Hubble Space Telescope (11382) is priced at ₹13,999, which will make any EMI calculator blush. This minifigure‑scale homage to the iconic telescope lands with 1,252 pieces, a respectable count for a display‑oriented build in the Icons line.

First impressions matter, and the box art does a decent job of showing the model perched on its stand. The two high‑gain antennas are correctly placed, but the artwork’s angle feels a bit off – the antennas should be perpendicular to the body, not folded flat. That’s a minor visual hiccup, but the real excitement starts once you crack open the 174‑page instruction booklet.

The build itself is surprisingly rewarding. LEGO has captured the cylindrical tube, solar panels, and the iconic primary mirror with a level of detail that will satisfy both astronomy buffs and seasoned builders. The two removable panels let you peer inside, revealing a simplified interior that includes the camera assembly and some wiring. The inclusion of three transparent wall elements printed with classic Hubble images adds a nice touch of authenticity for display.

From a construction standpoint, the set balances classic brick‑by‑brick techniques with a few clever tricks. The use of medium stone grey bricks gives the model a sleek, professional look, while the printed elements break the monotony. The astronaut minifigure, though small, serves as a nice scale reference and adds a human element to the otherwise mechanical piece.

One gripe: the set is a touch larger than true minifigure scale. At just over 45 studs long (about 360 mm), it sits somewhere between 1:37 and 1:40 scale. That’s not a deal‑breaker, but purists might notice the slight mismatch. The piece count translates to a per‑piece price of ₹11, which is on the higher side for an Icons set, but the niche subject matter justifies the premium.

The Hubble’s 35th anniversary is celebrated a year late, but the set still feels timely. It arrives at a moment when space exploration is back in the headlines, and LEGO’s decision to honor the telescope aligns with a growing interest in astronomy among adults. The inclusion of a sticker sheet and the printed wall elements means you can customize your display or even create a mini‑gallery on a shelf.

Overall, the set delivers a solid building experience, an attractive display piece, and enough thematic depth to make it a worthy addition to any adult collection. The only real drawback is the price tag, especially when you factor in import duties and the lack of official Indian retail pricing. If you’re willing to splurge for a niche masterpiece, the Hubble set will not disappoint. Otherwise, you might wait for a price drop or a bundled deal.
