LEGO Forest Animals: Grey Wolf (31393) Review: A Howl of a Good Time?

Your wallet might be whimpering, but this LEGO Creator 3-in-1 set is surprisingly affordable. The LEGO Forest Animals: Grey Wolf (31393) packs a lot of brick-built charm into a manageable size.

LEGO has been absolutely killing it with their Creator animal sets lately. Remember the Forest Animals: Red Fox from a couple of years back? This new Grey Wolf set follows in those paw prints, offering three distinct North American woodland creatures: a wolf, a falcon, and a raccoon. And honestly, the wolf build alone is worth the price of admission.

The primary model, the Grey Wolf, is a masterclass in LEGO fur texturing. They’ve used a clever mix of slopes, tiles, and even exposed studs to create this shaggy, realistic look. The gradient from white fur on the belly to darker grey on its back is spot on. The articulation is decent too – click sockets for the limbs and ball joints at the ankles let you pose it in various walking or standing positions. The head and tail are also on ball joints, giving them a good range of motion. That hinged jaw on the wolf's head? Chef's kiss. And the printed eyes, a new technique LEGO is using, look sharp. The only real gripe here is the lack of knee articulation in the legs, making it a bit stiff, and the shoulder gaps aren't the prettiest up close. The tail build is solid, tipped with black fur for contrast, and looks great posed dynamically. Inside the wolf, there’s even a hidden heart, a classic LEGO Easter egg.

Comparing it to its predecessor, the Red Fox (31154), the size is very similar, which makes sense given the piece count. Both are constructed using similar techniques, though the fox has slightly better articulation in its hind legs, allowing it to actually sit. The new half-rounded brick for the wolf's nose is a nice touch that wasn't available for the fox. The wolf's tail is a bit skinnier than the fox's, but overall, both are excellent builds. The reviewer even tried a hybrid creation, which is always a fun sign of a good Creator set.

The alternative builds, the falcon and the raccoon, are also strong contenders. The raccoon, in particular, is praised for its detail and display-worthiness. The falcon, while still good, suffers from some unsightly shoulder gaps, which is a shame given how well the rest of the set is executed.

The set comes with 657 pieces, and the price per piece is quite reasonable. For the level of detail and the quality of the builds, especially the wolf and the raccoon, this set offers great value. It's a display piece that doesn't break the bank and provides a satisfying building experience.
