LEGO Drive-Through Car Wash (60497): Worth ₹5,999?
Your wallet is probably used to big ticket LEGO sets, but this one is different. The LEGO City Drive-Through Car Wash (60497) isn't trying to bankrupt you. It's just… there. For ₹5,999, you get a car wash that’s meant for kids aged six and up. Does it wash away the competition? Let's find out.
The box art shows a red convertible getting a good soaking while a grey car waits its turn. The rear shows the red car emerging, water still dripping inside its open roof. This is a key play feature, apparently: the water gets everywhere. The set includes two cars and four minifigures – two drivers and two car wash employees. One worker is dressed as a sponge billboard, which is… a choice.
The build itself is split into three booklets. Two small ones for the cars, and a larger one for the car wash. It’s 583 pieces, with a price per piece that’s not exactly a steal, hovering around 10.3 cents per piece. The review copy was provided by LEGO, so take all opinions with a grain of salt, but the author seems to think it’s a decent set.
The cars use a 6x12x1 chassis element, which is common in these types of sets for simpler assembly. The author expresses a slight preference for brick-built vehicles but understands the appeal for younger builders. There are a couple of other unique-ish plates in the set that the reviewer questions the necessity of, feeling regular plates would have sufficed. It’s a minor quibble, but it hints at a design that prioritizes simplicity over innovation.
The minifigures are standard LEGO City fare. The red car driver has a floral shirt and a suitcase, while the grey car driver sports a hoodie. They have dual expressions, which is always a nice touch. The sponge billboard guy is the standout, though, in a very odd way.
Play features include the sliding car wash mechanism and a tipping water reservoir. The convertible aspect of the red car is also a focus, with the water feature designed to simulate rain getting inside. It sounds like fun for the target age group, but the review doesn't exactly gush about groundbreaking playability. The grey car is described as having an "unfinished look," which is never a good sign, even for a basic set.
The biggest drawback, honestly, is the price. ₹5,999 for 583 pieces and a mostly plastic chassis vehicle feels a bit steep. While the play features are there, and the minifigures are decent, it doesn't scream "must-buy" at this price point. It’s not a bad set, not by a long shot. It’s just… adequate. It does what it says on the tin: it’s a car wash.
If this were priced closer to ₹4,000, it would be an easy buy. But at nearly ₹6,000, you’re paying a premium for a fairly straightforward City build. You can get more impressive builds or more pieces for your money elsewhere in the LEGO universe. The Sponge Billboard Man is fun, though. That has to count for something.
At ₹5,999, that’s enough for roughly 15kg of good quality Alphonso mangoes, or about 6 months of a Spotify Premium Family Plan. MyBrickHouse and Toycra both have it listed for ₹5,999. Use code ABHINAV12 for 12% off on orders above ₹500 at Toycra.
This set is a classic "wait for a sale" item. It’s functional, has some fun elements for younger builders, but the price makes it hard to recommend at full retail.
On that bombshell, it's time to say goodbye. I'll see you on the next one. Bubyee.
Verdict: WAIT. Good set, but the price will drop.
