LEGO Donkey Kong Arcade (72051): Worth ₹17,999?

Your wallet called. It wants a word about the LEGO Donkey Kong Arcade (72051). This isn't your average pixelated nostalgia trip; it's a full-blown plastic recreation of the arcade cabinet that started it all. And at ₹17,999, it's definitely an investment.

This set brings back the original arcade game, complete with a playable Jumpman (yes, that's what they called Mario back then) who can actually jump and move across the screen. It’s a clever nod to the game's mechanics, even if he can’t quite manage the iconic climbing. The build itself, according to New Elementary, is a mixed bag. On one hand, it incorporates some interesting new elements, particularly the printed 1x1 round tiles that represent the barrels and the clever use of Technic pins to create the arcade controls. The aesthetic aims for authenticity, capturing the look of the original machine with a satisfying level of detail.

However, the playability, while a neat feature, is limited. You’re not going to get hours of frantic arcade action here. It’s more of a display piece with a fun, interactive gimmick. The New Elementary review highlights that while the core build is solid, some sections might feel a little repetitive, especially for those expecting a more complex building experience. The set’s reliance on the Super Mario interactive figures (sold separately, naturally) means you’ll need to factor that cost in if you don’t already own them, adding another layer to the overall expense.

The design team clearly put thought into recreating the arcade cabinet. The colour scheme is accurate, and the placement of the joystick and buttons feels right. The inclusion of Donkey Kong himself, even in a static form, is a great touch for fans. But does it justify the price? That’s where things get tricky. The New Elementary review notes that while the set has its charms, particularly for dedicated Nintendo and LEGO Super Mario fans, the overall value proposition is questionable for the casual builder. The piece count isn't astronomical, and the build techniques, while sometimes innovative, don't necessarily push the boundaries of LEGO design.

For collectors and those who grew up with the original Donkey Kong arcade, this set will hold significant appeal. It's a unique piece that bridges two iconic brands. But for the average LEGO fan, especially considering the price point, it might be hard to justify. The interactive elements, while a nice addition, don't quite elevate it to the level of a must-have set unless you're deeply invested in the LEGO Super Mario ecosystem.

MyBrickHouse lists the LEGO Donkey Kong Arcade (72051) for ₹17,999, though it might be out of stock. This is enough to buy about 10kg of premium Alphonso mangoes, or cover your Netflix Premium subscription for nearly a year. Toycra doesn't currently list this set, so importing might be your only option if MyBrickHouse is sold out. Use code ABHINAV12 for 12% off on orders above ₹500 at Toycra.

The verdict here is a cautious wait. If you’re a die-hard Nintendo and LEGO Super Mario fan, and the price doesn't make your eyes water, then go for it. But for most others, it's probably wise to hold off. Wait for a sale, or perhaps for a more accessible price point. The building experience is decent, the nostalgia factor is high, but the overall value is a bit of a tough nut to crack.

On that bombshell, it's time to say goodbye. I'll see you on the next one. Bubyee.

Verdict: WAIT. Good set, but the price will drop.
