LEGO Beach House with Seals (42699): Worth ₹4,999?

LEGO Friends has quietly been building out an entire zoo of moulded animal figures, and the seals in this beach house (42699) are the latest recruits. The question is whether ₹4,999 buys enough beach house to go with them.

This set offers a pretty standard Friends build, focusing on a colourful beachside dwelling. You get a house, a small beach area, and of course, the seals. The house itself is the main event, featuring two floors with rooms that are typical for the Friends line: a kitchen, a living area, and bedrooms. It’s all very bright and cheerful, as expected. The play features include things like opening doors and windows, and some accessories for the minifigures. It’s designed for imaginative play, letting kids (and let’s be honest, adults too) create stories by the sea.

The star attraction, however, is the inclusion of the seals. LEGO Friends has been leaning into animal figures more and more, and these seals are certainly cute. You get a couple of them, and they're integrated into the play experience, perhaps lounging on the beach or even inside the house. This is a smart move by LEGO; animals are always a big draw, and these seals add a unique selling point that differentiates it from a generic beach house. They’re moulded, not brick-built, which is a common approach for animal figures in this line.

Building the set is straightforward. It uses standard LEGO building techniques, so if you've built any LEGO set in the last decade, you'll feel right at home. The instructions are clear, and the usual colour-coded bags make the sorting process manageable. It’s not an overly complex build, which is fitting for its target audience. The final model looks good on display, especially with the vibrant colours. It captures that summery, relaxed beach vibe effectively.

However, we need to talk about the price. At ₹4,999, this set is asking a fair bit for what you get. While the seals are a nice addition, the overall size and complexity of the beach house itself don't entirely justify the cost. It feels a touch smaller than some other Friends sets in a similar price bracket. You're paying a premium for the theme and the exclusive animal figures. If you're a die-hard Friends fan or a collector of LEGO animals, you might find the value proposition stronger. For the casual builder, it might be a tougher sell.

The playability is high, as expected from LEGO Friends. The house is designed for interaction, and the seals add a layer of charm that encourages storytelling. Kids will likely have a blast with this set. The build is enjoyable, and the final product is aesthetically pleasing. But the price point is the elephant in the room, or rather, the seal on the beach. It's a good set, no doubt, but is it a great set for ₹4,999? That's the question.

LEGO.in and Toycra both have this set listed at ₹4,999. This is the standard retail price, and at this figure, it sits in a rather crowded market of LEGO sets. There are other larger, more complex builds available for similar money, or even slightly less, if you're not specifically after the Friends theme or the seals. It’s a good indicator that this might not be the best time to jump in at full price. Waiting for a sale or a discount seems like the most sensible approach here. It’s a solid set, but for that price, you might want to hold off until it dips.

At ₹4,999, that's about two weeks' worth of delicious street food biryani. LEGO.in and Toycra have it listed at ₹4,999. Code ABHINAV12 takes 12% off full-price sets at Toycra, minimum order ₹500.

It’s a fun, colourful set with a unique animal feature, but the price is a significant hurdle. If you're a dedicated Friends fan or desperately want those seals, it's a decent buy, but for most, waiting for a sale is the way to go.

Keep building, keep dreaming... And don't let your wallet see your LEGO wishlist.

At review, it was priced at ₹4,999 on LEGO.in. Verdict: WAIT.

Standard disclaimer: rich readers can skip the verdict and just buy it. We'll be over here checking if LEGO.in's HDFC EMI discount makes this hurt less.

On that bombshell, bubyee.
